TailHitter: WordPress Plug-in for automatic insertion of HitTail code in all posts & pages of your blog

HitTail does it’s job through a tracking code that you’ve to implement in your site. One of the problems I faced along the way was that whenever I changed my WordPress theme, I had to insert the HitTail tracking code manually in each theme’s footer. Trust me when I say it can get really tiresome after a while. There was this one occasion (following a theme switch) when my HitTail stats stopped updating altogether. After much deliberation I figured that while I’d reactivated all my other plug-ins, I’d forgotten to insert the tracking code in my new template. If only I had some plug-in doing the same for me automatically every time, it’d be oh-so-convenient. Hence I did some quick research into plug-ins that insert code into WordPress headers & footers and came up with this one.

7 Useful Tools and Sites for Using Digg on Handheld Mobile Devices, Palm Pilots, Smart Phones, & PDAs

7 Useful Tools and Sites for Using Digg on Handheld Mobile Devices, Palm Pilots, Smart Phones,  & PDAs

I just got my first wireless PDA yesterday, so of course, I was very excited to try using social networking sites on it. I was actually quite surprised how hard it is to use a website on a PDA. When I visited Digg.com, I couldn’t login. No matter how many times I tried to submit my login and password, nothing happened. After I decided to just type in my digg.com/login/ to get to the actual login page, then I was able to login. But even after this, there were a lot of problems, such as clicking on ‘digg it’ didn’t work (which is a huge problem if you want to use the site), and many other links weren’t working for me. So, I decided to look into other ways of using Digg on my PDA. Below are 7 useful sites that you might want to consider, if you are going to use Digg on your mobile device. All of these sites are great for browsing top stories, however, I was hoping to find a tool to view my friends recent submissions. I like to follow my friends’ stories, and I couldn’t find a way to do this on a mobile device. Any advice for this would be very welcomed. Enjoy the list below.

Top 7 Sites / Tools for Digging on a Mobile Device

Digg River has recently added the ability for previously registered users to Digg stories and will continue to add more features in the future. Digg River

Digg Mobile

Digg Mobile is a very simple listing of Digg’s top stories. It doesn’t list number of votes, number of comments, who dugg it, or its category. But if you want something that is in this format, then Digg Mobile is good for you.

How to use Rojo.com to get Traffic to your Site

How to use Rojo.com to get Traffic to your Site

If you’ve spent much time online these days, you probably know that there is some basic content that pops up all over the web. Entertainment and celebrity gossip, politics and news, science and health, and technology and web 2.0 are major categories that are of interest to a lot of people who are doing online reading. And if you have a website or blog, you probably incorporate at least a few of these topics into it regularly to make sure that you’re getting new readers. If so, you might want to think about spreading the word through Rojo.com, a social bookmarking site that categorizes all of the most popular content on the web.

Unlike many of the social bookmarking sites, Rojo isn’t specialized. It isn’t just for people who want to read about the latest gadgets and it isn’t just for people who want to know the news. Because it is more generalized, Rojo.com is a good social bookmarking tool for most people who have a blog or website that they want to increase traffic to. When you first sign up for an account at Rojo, you’ll be able to select one of their content packages. If your site has content that falls into one of these categories (such as “celebrity and style maven” or “political animal”) your site will probably do well through Rojo.

Rojo has a number of different features that make it fun to use. This means that you’ll benefit from using Rojo, plus your website will benefit because these tools help give you exposure. For example, Rojo offers the option of signing up to get “the best of the blogosphere” in your inbox. If your content makes it on the list, Rojo will do the work of emailing it out to all the people who might be interested in it, increasing traffic to your website through email marketing without you having to do much at all. Rojo also allows you to search blogs and news through their site, which means you might get a little bit of extra traffic that way.

Unlike other social bookmarking sites, you can’t just add any old post to Rojo. Instead, you can add feeds. It’s fairly simple to create a feed for your blog and then you can add this to Rojo to help get noticed on the site. After you create this feed for your blog, you should post an announcement letting everyone know that you’ve done this and that they should subscribe to your feed on Rojo. This will drive traffic that already likes your blog to the Rojo site which will increase your popularity on Rojo (which works off of a “mojo” voting system) and that will, in turn, send new traffic back to your site. Remember to also let others know to check out your Rojo feed by adding a link to your email signature and mentioning it in any newsletters you put out. The more you can spread the word about your work on Rojo, the more that Rojo can work for you.

How to use Linkagogo to get Traffic to your Site

How to use Linkagogo to get Traffic to your Site

If you are relatively new to social bookmarking, you might want to get started by trying to use Linkagogo. Although this is not one of the most well-established or often-used social bokmarking tools, it’s one of the easiest to learn. The Linkagogo home page gives you a really great introduction to social bookmarking that will serve you well no matter which social bookmarking sites you move on to using after adjusting to this one. And while you’re learning to use social bookmarking through Linkagogo, you’ll also be increasing the traffic that goes to your blog or website.

Like other social bookmarking sites, Linkagogo will let you store your favorite web pages online and let others see them. One of the features that is especially great on Linkagogo is the “favorites portal” which allows you to have a favorites section on your social bookmarking site. This is good because you can add all different types of content to your Linkagogo page but you can draw particular attention to your website and those that link to it by archiving these as your favorites. This will help get traffic to your site by getting your site noticed more often by people who are visiting your Linkagogo page.

Linkagogo also gives you, as a user, a lot of control. You can choose whether or not you want to put your links on the “Society Page” of the site. If you choose to do so, those links can be seen by other site users. And of course, this means that those site users can choose to visit your links and therefore increase hits on your web page. Additionally, you can add your logo to different areas of Linkagogo (such as on your folders) which will draw people’s attention and help your business stick out in their minds.

Another great feature of Linkagogo is that it gives you a few different options for storing your information on the site. You can organize your bookmarks into folders, you can create a directory or you can find some other means of organization. This gives you a chance to see what systems you like which will help you decide which other (similar) social bookmarking sites might be good for you. On Linkagogo, you can also do specialized things like annotating your bookmarks and emailing them to people. These features are offered on some (but not all) other social bookmarking sites, so again, that’s something that you can play with while you learn what kinds of social bookmarking tools are right for you.

Linkagogo is easy to use. It lets you import your existing favorites from your computer and it will synchronize to make sure that you can use everything on your preferred browser. Linkagogo is also known for working quickly and loading with very few problems. For this reason, it’s an easy site to use for getting to know how social bookmarking works. And since social bookmarking is one of the keys to getting traffic to your site in the modern online world, learning Linkagogo can help increase your revenue!

How to Use Netvouz to get Traffic to your Site

How to Use Netvouz to get Traffic to your Site

If you have blog content that is written entirely – or partially – in a language other than English, then you need a social bookmarking tool that will take this into consideration. Although Netvouz isn’t for everyone, it’s great for people who have multiple language content on their sites. And even if you have English-only content, you might be able to appeal to the users of Netvouz by posting on topics that are relevant to the issues that interest them. The benefit of this site is that you really are reaching out to social bookmarking users who aren’t often on the other sites which means that you’re getting traffic that you wouldn’t otherwise have gotten.

The basic of Netvouz are the same as any other social bookmarking site. You’ll set up an account, organize your favorite sites (including your own) into folders on this account and share that information with other users on the site in order to generate traffic for your own content. You will make use of the “popular tags” listed on the right hand side of the Netvouz home page to make sure that you have content that’s good for the site. Notice that the tags on this site are similar to those on other sites but that other uncommon tags are included as well. Work these uncommon tags into your content to get the most new users from the site.

Note that there are links right on the home page of Netvouz. And note also that there are listed by date. This means that you are going to get the most traffic from the site by posting content on it regularly. The more often you’re on the main page, the more likely it is that people will be clicking on your links. Also note that you can make “hotpicks” out of your own lists; you should definitely make all of your sites and all sites that link to yours “hotpicks”. This lets you include other content while still drawing attention to your own.

If you go to “popular links” on Netvouz, you’ll see that it doesn’t take too many users to get you bumped up to the “popular” list on this site. That’s a great thing because it means that you can make use of your existing contacts to drive attention to your site on Netvouz where you’ll gain new traffic. When you’re getting started with using Netvouz, you can export your links from existing social bookmarking sites that you are active on. Netvouz imports from Del.icio.us which many other new social bookmarking sites do – but it also imports from other sites (like RawSugar) so you can combine content on a number of different sites to reach new users that aren’t on the sites you already use. And this is all done very easily because Netvouz has a “get started wizard” that you can run through to simplify the process. That makes sense in any language!

Slashdot effect traffic and wordpress plugins to survive it

Have you heard the term “Slashdot Effect”? If not, you’re probably not spending enough time in the world of Web 2.0 because it’s a phrase that’s bandied about quite a bit to describe the traffic increase that occurs for small websites when they are linked to by larger websites. There are spinoffs of the phrase being used now to describe the Slashdot Effect as it applies to traffic driven from certain sites (such as The Digg Effect for Digg-driven traffic). But at its core, it describes the general phenomenon of this traffic trend, a trend which is important to understand if you have an interest in driving traffic to your own site.

Basically, the concept of the Slashdot Effect is a concept of online popularity. Think of the stereotypical high school cliques. When Suzy Cheerleader and John Quarterback take a sudden interest in Artsy Artie, Artie’s own popularity increases simply by virtue of the popularity of Suzy and John. Artie’s no longer this unknown kid sitting at the end of the lunch table; he’s someone who is said hello to in the hallways and who is asked to draw things on the notebooks of other kids. Artie’s social value increases purely because of the attention he’s gotten from the popular kids. This is basically how the Slashdot Effect works – a popular site pays attention to a site that was previously unnoticed and it starts to get loads of attention as a result.

The Slashdot Effect is important in the online world because visibility is critical to the success of a web business. People have to know that your site is there or there’s almost no reason for it to be online at all. And the way that people start to know about it is that other sites link to it. When big sites link to your site, your page ranking increases, you go up in search engine visibility and other people online start to know about your site. So, the Slashdot Effect can drive great numbers to your site and rapidly increase your popularity.

However, there’s a negative side to the Slashdot Effect that you also need to be aware of. See, the thing is that many small websites just are not equipped to handle the rapid traffic increase that happens as a result of the Slashdot Effect. Let’s go back to Artie. At first, the new attention is exciting, but then his phone starts ringing off the hook, he’s overwhelmed by invitations to events and requests for his art drawings and suddenly Artie is feeling stressed out. Too much unexpected attention at once can burn him out. And too much traffic to your site that isn’t used to traffic like that can cause it to crash.

The Slashdot Effect is an important thing to know about and understand, especially as you start getting in to the regular use of social bookmarking sites to drive traffic to your website or blog. But you also need to understand the ways that it can shut down your site and the things that you need to do to protect yourself from that. That way, you can be a happy version of Artie attending the prom with his new friends, rather than Artie who returns to being an outcast after the overwhelming attention shuts him down.

Here are Some Tools and Plugins to Help You Get Your Server Through the Slashdot Effect Without Crashing

MirrorDot - When a site gets slashdotted, it can really spoil your groove. MirrorDot keeps the party going! When Slashdot posts a new story, MirrorDot automagically parses the story and mirrors any linked pages. Do not let the Slashdot effect kill your buzz. Yeah baby!

Wp-cache 2.1.2 - I use WP-Cache on all of my sites because it works. WP-Cache is an extremely efficient WordPress page caching system to make your site much faster and responsive. It works by caching Worpress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests directly from the file rather than loading and compiling the whole PHP code and then building the page from the database. WP-Cache allows to serve hundred of times more pages per second, and to reduce the response time from several tenths of seconds to less than a millisecond. You might find this article helpful - How to: Configure WP-Cache to abate ‘the digg effect’

Network Mirror - Slashdot publishes many articles per day that reference other sites. When a new Slashdot article gets published, thousands of folks navigate to the referenced web sites. The big sites can handle the traffic spike, no problem. The little ones, on the other hand… Well, let’s just say the little ones don’t fare so well. It’s called the Slashdot Effect or being Slashdotted. Enter Network Mirror where they can add a mirror image of the page(s) referred to in the Slashdot posting and have them ready to go soon after the article goes live on Slashdot. Network Mirror has good hardware and a high-bandwidth connection, so in theory, they should be able to “step in”, as it were, for the troubled site.

Digg Defender - Even though this was created for Digg, it will work with Slashdot as well. Digg Defender utilized Coral Cache to make a Cached Coral Cache version of our page. This way, when your Wordpress blog gets hit by a DDOS from the popular linksites, it can respond quickly and fluidly without having to load all of your plugins, Wordpress, or even make a single mySQL database call. This will optimize the performance significantly. One thing is that when I used it on one of my blogs, I was getting Google Adsense Ads on my Coral Cached version that were in different languages than my target audience.

How to use De.lirio.us to get Traffic to your Site

No, that isn’t a typo in the title of this article; it’s not supposed to be an article about using De.licio.us which is the social bookmarking site that you’re probably fairly familiar with. Instead, it’s about how to use De.lirio.us, a site that clearly mimics the De.licio.us style. Like De.licio.us, it is a social bookmarking tool which allows you to archive and organize information and to network with other users in order to increase traffic to your own website or blog. But, De.lirio.us differs from De.licio.us in a number of significant ways, making it possible to use this social bookmarking tool to reach an entirely different group of computer users than those you are getting from using De.licio.us.

If you go to the De.lirio.us home page, you’ll see that it’s a fairly straightforward, simple site. You can see there the articles that have been recently archived on to the site. And as you peruse the headlines, you’ll see that De.lirio.us draws attention to a big range of topics. In fact, the topics that are covered on De.lirio.us are broader in range than those on Del.icio.us in some ways. This means that it’s easier to use De.lirio.us to do article marketing and promote targeted blog posts than might be possible on Del.icio.us.

Using De.lirio.us is basically the same as using Del.icio.us or any of the other major social bookmarking sites. You register to get a free account and then you begin archiving your favorite sites, starting (of course) with your own. You should make sure to use a moderate number of good tags that describe the content of the material that you are sending to the site. Unlike many other social bookmarking sites, De.lirio.us doesn’t provide a list of “hot tags” or “recently popular tags” so you will need to use common sense in compiling your own relevant lists. You can check the hot tags of other sites to get a basic idea of what tags might be good to use.

Like many other sites, such as Digg, Technorati and Del.icio.us, De.lirio.us provides you with a bookmarklet which you can add to your site or posts. People can click on this button to vote for your page on De.lirio.us. You should do this if you believe that a large number of your readers use (or might want to use) De.lirio.us. If not, you can bypass this part of using the site since you don’t want to overload your posts with too many different bookmarklets. On that same note, De.lirio.us actually allows you to import all of your Del.icio.us links to this new site. You can consider doing this but should think twice about importing everything. You might want to be selective about doubling up on content.

It should be noted that De.liri.ous may be similar to Del.icio.us but it is actually operated by Simpy, another one of the social bookmarking sites. Knowing this, you can spend some time looking at the posts that are put up on Simpy, Del.icio.us and De.lirio.us and determine which content you have that is right for each site. It doesn’t hurt to spread your work around to different social bookmarking sites this way. In fact, this is what allows you to use sites like De.lirio.us to get traffic from users who differ from those you’re getting on your other social bookmarking sites.

How to use Reddit to get Traffic to your Site

How to use Reddit to get Traffic to your Site

Reddit is one of the social bookmarking sites that relies heavily on your interaction with the user community on the site. Reddit uses a point system in which users can vote on each post; the posts with the most points get pushed to Reddit’s home page for all to see. But Reddit is even more complex than this basic voting system implies; there are also ways to discuss the posts and to vote on the comments that are left on the posts which can affect their visibility as well. In order to be able to use Reddit to effectively direct traffic to your website, you need to get a handle on the voting system and user interaction that drives this particular social bookmarking tool.

In order to start using Reddit, you simply need to go to the site and register for an account. There are no toolbars to install and no confirmation emails to get you started which makes this a very easy site to sign up with. But once you’ve done that, you need to spend a significant amount of time networking on the site in order to gain popularity on the site and get traffic to head over to your site from there. The first thing that you should do is to begin submitting websites to Reddit. You should submit your website as well as relevant quality pages on your website (particular blog posts for example).

Next, you need to start meeting other Reddit users. This is best done by getting involved in discussions that are going on about other people’s posts. Do a search to find posts that are similar to your own and work your way into the discussions there by leaving comments. Be aware that your comments can be voted down so you don’t just want to spam posts with your own links. You want to leave interesting comments that show that you read the posts on which you are commenting. For this reason, it’s better to get involved in just a few discussions at a time and to contribute well to them.

You should know that Reddit is somewhat specialized in the kind of content that is found there. There are “subreddits” which are kind of like major topics that are of interest to Reddit users. The popularity of these varies depending on the day but top categories usually include programming, science and politics. If your content doesn’t relate to these categories or ones that would be of interest to people who enjoy these categories, you might not be able to get the attention of Reddit users. If that’s the case, you should consider using a different social bookmarking site instead of this one.

However, Reddit does get a fair amount of traffic, so if you have regular or occasional posts on your site or blog that are relevant to Reddit, you should think about using the site. It allows you to get into some interesting discussion which can prompt additional posts that will then be seen by Reddit users. The interaction that’s necessary to make it work can be time-consuming but it can also pay off in high traffic directed to your site.
